Since most of people nowadays own a smartphones, they do not realize that they are walking around with a very talkative companion who keeps on talking to a transmission towers nearby and telling these towers where you are right now. The phone operator more or less could detect where you are in a range of a particular area. But if you have a GPS enabled phone, the accuracy of detecting your location is much more precise. With installed apps in smartphones nowadays, people are happily giving their location at the moment.

It is recently uncovered that FBI already has a technology to force cell phones to register its phone number, serial number and location through a cell site simulator.

The Technology is called “Triggerfish”. So, if you remember in the movies where the characters were asked to avoid making any calls if they do not want to be traced? Well, this technology is even worse. They can even detect your phone even if your are not making any calls. You must remember that your cell phones is always communicating with the cell phone transmission tower regardless if you are making a call or not.

So, how you would know that you are being spied by the Government or someone else? First thing, you can check your data usage. If the data usage suddenly increase even though you are not using it, it shows that your phone have been communicating to something or third party services without your knowledge.

Another quick way is to check your battery. If it suddenly was drained even though you just charged it, probably some program is actively being running behind and being transferring data actively without you authorizing it. So, the best way to not let your phone being detected is to leave it home or just pull out the battery.

You just lost your phone.. Now what?

So, you just lost your precious phone. It is not about the chunk of money you spent on the phone and all the pictures you saved in the phone, but sometimes sentimental attachment you have to that phone. If it is a smart phone it is much worse. All the information you jotted down and appointment that you have set are now all but gone. Thanks for the cloud services if you are using iphone, the contacts and pictures can be retrieved, but some of the info that you have net clouded in will be lost forever.

This way, whoever who finds or stole your phone will not be able to use your phone. The second thing is to provide your service provider the number of your phones IMEI. You should have kept the IMEI number before you even lost your phone in a safe place. This can be done by pressing *#06# on your phone keypad.

This will show a string of numbers. This represents your phone unique identity. By giving this IMEI number to your service provider, they can check whether your phone have been actively been used recently even if the person who finds or stole your phone change the sim. If you own a smartphone, it will make tracking your phone much easier. As a precautious measure, you should have installed apps in your smartphone that will help track your phone if it is lost in the future.
