In a mobile society nowadays, where people are getting extremely mobile, it is pointless sometimes to keep in touch with your friends just by knowing their home or office address. As people are getting mobile, the exact location of a people you know might know is not the same as always. So, how do you keep track of your friends or relatives just in case you want to know where they are? One method is to track through their mobile number.

How do you do this? There are several options available. Some of network operators do provide services for their subscribers to help locate your friend’s location using their mobile number. You can even use this service to see who your friends that are nearby. However, usually this service is permission based. You can only know the location if your friends allow you to. Another option is to use social media such as Google+ and Facebook function. Google+ and Facebook have the option of letting the people within their circle know where they are currently.

Another option is to use apps. If you are an Android user, they are several apps that you can download for free and allows you track the mobile number of your friends such as Foursquare, Mobile number tracker and loopt apps. But what to do if you been harassed by an unknown number? First and easy option is to just type the number into Google. As people are now posting more and more personal online, it is quite possible you will be able to know who the person is by typing the number into Google search engine.

You might stumble upon this person’s Facebook or Google+. But please take note that mobile number are basically kept private by people because they do not want their privacy to be invade. So, some of the methods listed will sometimes not work and it is a norm. You can only use mobile number to track people only if they allow you to do so.

How to Track a Phone Using IMSI

First of all, what is IMSI? IMSI stands for International Mobile Subscriber Identity. If IMEI number refers to the unique identity of the phone, IMSI actually represents the unique identity for the subscriber of the phone including the origin country and mobile network that the subscriber subscribes. It basically identifies the user of a cellular network and every cellular network has its own unique identification.

In layman’s term, if IMEI can be considered similar as the plate number of your car, IMSI represents the unique identity of whoever is driving the car. Basically, all GSM and UTMS networks use IMSI as the primary identity of a subscriber or user. The number that represents IMSI can be as long as 15 digits or shorter.

The first three digits are the mobile country code and followed by the mobile network code. The information of IMSI is also contained in the SIM card. IMSI are normally used by network operator to examine the subscribers and whether to allow the subscriber to use another network operator.

Law enforcement has been using certain technology such as Stingray or Triggerfish to track the IMSI number of a subscriber. By using the technology to track your IMSI, the authority can actually track not just the location of your phone but also who you are calling, at what time and where the call is made.

The Stingray will act as a fake cell towers that then will trigger your cell phone to communicate with it. Once communication is established, the technology will able to even capture your conversation. This technology is controversial however as innocent public probably do not want their conversation to be captured or heard. Triggerfish technology envisions a scenario that usually happens in an espionage movie.


How to Track a Cell Phone After You Lose it

Some users never anticipated that they will lose their phone. So they might not take any early preventive measures or install some apps that will help them track the phone once it is gone. They also do not even know what is their phones IMEI numbers are. So, what are the steps that they can take to recover their phones once it goes missing?

If you are an android user, you can actually download an app to your lost phones even though it is not with you anymore. As long as you have an account in Google Play, you can download the apps from the Google Play.

Another alternative is to detect the IP address of your phone through your Gmail or Dropbox and check their last logged IP address. This is with the assumption that your lost phone is logged into the internet once it was stolen. You can report the IP adress to the police and let the police do the necessary action. Do not attempt to recover the phone by yourselves. You do not want to be putting yourself or anyone in danger.
